Tap Whisky Finished Collection Launches New Marque to Join the Portfolio
NEW YORK (September 4, 2014) – Van Gogh Imports announces its newest addition to the Tap Whisky Finished Collection with the release of Tap Rye Sherry Finished. The new marque is an eight-year-old Canadian rye whisky expertly blended with fine Spanish Amontillado Sherry, creating a sophisticated rye whisky that is as smooth and flavorful as it is unique.
Imported by Van Gogh Imports, TAP Rye Sherry Finished will hit retailers by mid-October and retail for $39.99/750ml bottle.
The Tap Whisky Finished Collection currently includes Tap 357 Canadian Maple Rye Whisky and Tap Port Finished Canadian Rye Whisky. As with the first two marques, Tap Rye Sherry Finished 8 Year Old is handcrafted in small batches at the oldest distillery in Western Canada and finished in small quantities in Quebec by Master Blender Michel Marcel.
“Canadian rye whisky is about flavor and enjoyment,” said Norman Bonchick, Chairman and CEO of Van Gogh imports. “Rye grown in colder climates, like Canada, has more spice and brings a lot of great flavor to the whisky. By using an eight-year-old aged Canadian rye and finishing it with a small amount of Amontillado sherry, we’ve created that additional layer of taste that Tap Whisky fans have come to expect.”
The Amontillado Sherry used in Tap Rye Sherry Finished comes from the Jerez region in Spain where the finest Sherries are produced. Sherry is the latest trend that is riding high in the spirits world – and the combination of the aged Canadian rye paired with Spanish sherry is the perfect marriage of decadent and delicate.
The whisky is distilled multiple times in small batches using a pot still and continuous distillation from a reserve blend before it is placed in casks to age for eight years. Once the whisky has come of age, the rye is expertly finished by Marcel with a small amount of Amontillado Sherry and placed in charred white oak bourbon barrels from North America. A resting period of no less than 60 days then commences to ensure the aged rye and sherry are well integrated before the spirit is bottled in elegant Bruni glass and cork-finished.
Although rye from Canada is spicier than that from the United States, Canadian rye whisky is often considered the smoother of the two and Tap Rye Sherry Finished is no exception with its velvety texture. Deep amber in color, Tap Rye Sherry Finished has a warm nose of toasted vanilla and clove with bold notes of spice, nuts and citrus on the palate leading to a lingering finish. “I liken it to instant gratification,” said Bonchick. “Smooth and flavorful, with layers of spice and nuts—it’s delicious on first taste—second and third too.”
With the launch of Tap Rye Sherry Finished, Tap Whisky has created a Barrel-Aged Cocktail Program for accounts featuring beautifully branded oak barrels where innovative mixologists can serve their guests classic and unique aged cocktails directly from the barrel. Additional barrel-aged recipes are under development by Master Mixologist Jonathan Pogash, and will be available on the Tap Whisky website.
